Marra House is a remarkable project situated on a large parcel of rural land. A carefully considered design sees this house embrace incredible views and elements of the surrounding landscape. Materially this project showcased large windows to capitalise on the views, polished concrete floors and externally vertical charred timber cladding paired with painted steel columns to compliment its bushland surroundings and soften with the elements in time.
Project type: Construction – New Build

Interior Design: Tom Robertson Architects
Michael and Lou designed the house themselves and were very involved in the material amalgamation and the overall aesthetic look and feel of the home.
Their design included custom lighting, custom timber doors along the hallway in addition to a large custom entry door. To tap into the natural environment, they selected many grounded materials, such as the timber lined walls, floor to ceiling windows and a black ceiling that really drew the outside in.
Initially, they wanted to do slab concrete floors, however it was important to stay within the budget so we had to collaboratively come up with alternate solutions.
Micheal and Lou further needed to achieve their vision and move in before Christmas, while staying within their budget, which was a tall order at the time.
While Michael and Lou were able to source the materials themselves, all the custom doors along the hallway required a high level of detail along with the wood panelling. Clean lines needed to meet the ceiling throughout the house, which created a striking contrast with the black ceiling.
Being guided by the budget, we believe replacing the expensive concrete slab floor with bluestone tiles resulted in a better outcome, adding beautiful patterns throughout the home.
Our team was heavily involved in each and every aspect of the build, from the design process to problem solving material alternatives and ensuring each detail was executed to a very high standard. All while keeping a close eye on the budget and timeline to ensure Michael and Lou were happy with each aspect of the project.
Michael describes their rural home as very grounding and such a nice house to live in as they feel connected to the outside. Our team managed to help them achieve their vision within their budget and strict timeline. It was an enjoyable building experience, for everyone involved.
“We honestly enjoyed the building experience, because of the good team around us.” – Michael
